Lime pointing for sandstone buildings in Fife, Edinburgh, Dundee and Perth
Lime pointing is how these houses were built and how they should be repaired. If the joints on your wall are crumbling, open, or patched with grey cement, we rake them out by hand and repoint them in lime, so the wall can dry out and the stone stops breaking up.

What we fix
What lime pointing puts right
Most of the calls we get start with one of these. If you are not sure what you are looking at, send a photo or book the survey and we will tell you.

Crumbling or missing pointing
Sandy joints that come away with the weather, gaps you can push a finger into, mortar lying at the foot of the wall.
Cement pointing on sandstone
Hard grey mortar that has cracked, with the stone flaking or spalling around it. We remove it and repoint in lime.
Damp on inside walls
Rain getting in through open joints and sitting in the stone. Repointing is often the fix, and cheaper than people expect.
Tenements, villas and cottages
Repointing for one flat or the whole stair. We can quote per section and help with the paperwork the factor needs.
Chimneys, copes and high joints
The joints that take the worst of the weather. Checked properly from up close, not guessed from the ground.
Ashlar and rubble stone
Fine joints on dressed ashlar and wide joints on rubble walls, matched in colour and texture to what is there.

Why The Scottish Stone Repair Co
Lime, not cement, and honest about what needs doing
A lot of the damage we see was caused by the last repair. Cement sets harder than the stone, traps water behind it and shifts the strain onto the sandstone. Lime moves with the wall and lets it dry. It takes longer to do properly, which is why some firms skip it.

Questions people ask us
Lime pointing questions
How do I know if my pointing needs doing?
Look for joints that are sandy, cracked, hollow or missing, mortar lying at the bottom of the wall, green or dark staining below a joint, and damp patches on inside walls. If you can see grey cement pointing on an old sandstone house, that is worth a survey too.
Why lime and not cement?
Cement is harder than sandstone and does not let water out. Rain gets in, cannot dry, and the stone fails around the joint. Lime is softer than the stone, flexes with it and lets the wall dry. It is what the building was built with.
How much does lime pointing cost?
It depends on the size of the area, how much old mortar has to be raked out, the type of joint and, more than anything, the access. Scaffolding is often the biggest single cost, which is why we show it as its own line on the quote. The survey and the written quote are free.
When is the best time of year for lime pointing?
Lime needs to cure without frost, so the main season runs from spring to early autumn. We survey and quote all year, and we can protect work in colder months, but a job booked now is often best done from spring.
Do you work on tenements and listed buildings?
Yes. We repoint whole elevations and single sections, and we can quote for one owner or the whole stair. For listed buildings we use lime and matching materials as the council expects, and we can advise on what needs consent.
